Last month, I wrote about the fashion color trends for fall, with tones of evergreen, spice, and chocolate coming on strong. Now that I’ve added a few of these warm colors to my cold weather wardrobe, I’m ready to update my cosmetic bag with a couple of new lipsticks to complement my sweaters, scarves, and loden green jacket.
A trip to both the cosmetics departments of Nordstrom and Rite Aid proved fruitful: from top designers to wallet-savvy brands, this fall’s lipstick selections are running the gambit of wine, brown, brick and nude hues. Here are a few of my favorites.
- Burnt Red: Chanel Rouge Allure Nightfall; Maybelline Smoking Red
- Tawny Nude: Lipstick Queen Nothing But The Truth; Giorgio Armani Sand
- Chocolate Brown: NARS Done It Again
- 90s Nude: NYX Cliquey Matte; MAC Politely Pink
- Deep Plum: Becca Black Violet; Urban Decay Venom
I have also found that strong colors call for special lipstick application to keep from looking faded or cake-y. First, apply a very thin layer of clear, waxy lip balm. Next, pick a lip pencil that closely matches (or complements) your lipstick, outline your lips, then color in the entire lip with the pencil; this will give your lipstick something to hold onto. Next, using a lip brush, apply one coat of the lipstick and blot with a tissue. Then, apply a second coat of the lipstick without blotting. As the lipstick begins to wear, you’ll be left with a soft “stain” of color…much more becoming than blotchy patches of color.
Off now to ponder my new fall fragrance!
