Have you ever looked at your grandparents’ wedding photos…or your parents’ for that matter…and been lost looking at the details? The embellishments on the gown, the size and mix of flowers in the bouquet, the venue’s decor, the color and cut of the groomsmen’s tuxes…without looking at the date on the back of the picture, you know immediately, “1950s,” or “1980s”.
Years from now, a younger generation will be looking at photos taken this spring. Here are some of the trends they’ll spot, clues to help them place those weddings smack-dab in the middle of 2018.
Ring, Ring, Ring, Ring
One wedding band is wonderful. Several wedding bands, stacked together are even better, in the eyes of some brides. Stacking rings are a popular fashion trend that has made its way to the altar. Stacking rings can be custom-designed: every combination is unique. You can also add to the stack to mark anniversaries, the birth of children, and other important life moments.
Out with the understated touch of tulle. In with longer, lavishly embellished statement veils. We’re seeing veils embroidered with blossoms, blooms and stars, finished with fringe, even going edgy with metallic stats. By the way, similar adornment – particularly over-the top-embroidery – is a hot trend for wedding gowns, too. Trust us: a little goes a long way!
Sign-in of the Times
The guest book is one tradition that isn’t going anywhere. However, today’s newlyweds are exploring guest books that double as “art” for their homes. Puzzles, wooden signs, decorative glassware filled with guests’ names are just a few of the interesting alternatives to signatures scrawled in a paper album.
“Do You Take this Dog..."
Some couples have known – and loved – their pets longer than they have one another! Finding a way to make dogs, cats, and other furry (or feathered) friends part of the wedding is a huge trend. Pets have been known to serve as “ring bearers,” decked out in their own custom-made tuxes. Others have made their appearance on save-the-date cards, in official wedding portraits, even on cake toppers.
Whoosh! That’s the sound of a bride (or groom!) sauntering down the aisle, bedecked in a dramatic wedding cape. The perfect way to add some “church appropriate” modesty to a sleeveless gown, capes were beginning to catch on last season. Expect them to be big this year and next as well.
The modern reception décor is relying heavily on clear acrylic accents this season. From onsite signage to table place cards, acrylics in a range of colors are key to the trendy “modern minimalism” theme many newlyweds prefer. We’ve even received acrylic wedding invitations (which double nicely as coasters, if you like to hold onto your friends’ nuptial announcements).
Sands of Time
For those not opting to go ultra-modern, many couples are garnering venue inspiration from the desert. It’s rapidly replacing the “rustic farmhouse” décor of the past five or so years. Painted sands, sunset hues, weather-textured wood, and cacti are giving receptions a distinctively Southwestern vibe. And yes, many guests are chowing down on tacos, tamales, and margaritas before hitting the dance floor. Olé!
